TBS Founder James Orange
I am the Owner and Founder of Total Building Solutions (TBS) James Orange. My journey commenced as an apprentice plumber, following my apprenticeship. Initially, self-employment presented challenges. However, I transitioned back to full-time employment, where I flourished for the next five years.
Unforeseen events meant that the company I was employed by entered administration, causing immense shock. Amidst this turmoil, I experienced the loss of my mother, leading to depression and a loss of motivation.
Recognising the need to be strong for my young family, I sought a small loan from a family member to purchase a van. This pivotal decision marked the beginning of my entrepreneurial path.
Initially, I undertook small plumbing jobs, managing cash flow concerns. Gradually, I gained confidence in taking on larger projects. Additionally, I utilised a job tendering website called “Rated People,” where customer’s clients listed their jobs and I was able pay for leads to tender for jobs.
During this period, I encountered Nick Bradshaw, who sought a heating system upgrade for his home. My exceptional workmanship earned me an invitation to quote jobs at a cash-and-carry facility he maintained.
In 2014, TBS was established.
I took the plunge into unfamiliar territories, engaging subcontractors outside of the plumbing industry to get the maintenance business off the ground. Despite initial early successes, the direction of the business took a different turn that led me to where I am today when I received a phone call inquiring about renovating a tired bathroom at a care home in Nottingham. This was a new experience for me, as it involved residential care. Eager to prove myself, I visited the client and secured the job. Subsequently, they requested my assistance with other works, which I graciously accepted.
Unexpectedly, the client informed me that they were selling their small cluster of care homes and no longer required FM services. I expressed my gratitude for their support and wished them the best in their future endeavours.
Whilst completing outstanding jobs within the care homes, I was approached by the company that had brought them out. They asked me to tender for the FM contract on the homes. Initially, I was unfamiliar with the tender process and dedicated lot of time to researching and understanding it, working with my wife to ensure timely submission.
Three weeks later, I was invited to their head office for a meeting. It became evident that I had been shortlisted alongside another company. Surprisingly, it was the company I had served my apprenticeship with. During the meeting, we engaged in in-depth discussions, answering their questions with the utmost knowledge and expertise.
After a cordial handshake, I was informed that they would be in touch. I left the meeting with a little hope of securing the contract, as I recognised the immense resources and capabilities of PWP Building Services, a multimillion pound business. Two days later, I received a phone call that shattered all my expectations. The voice on the other end said “Mr. Orange,” and I promptly answered. To my astonishment, they extended an offer for the FM contract.
The initial two years were the most challenging I have ever faced. I juggled multiple responsibilities, working extended hours and isolating myself from family and friends. The overwhelming workload left me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about my ability to succeed. However, my partner’s unwavering encouragement provided me with the strength to persevere. Over the years, I continued to win FM contracts, solidifying the foundation of my maintenance company.
Six years of hard work and dedication culminated in an opportunity to quote for a school refurbishment project. Our client had recently acquired an old school building with the vision of transforming it into a special needs school. I was provided with the tender pack and secured the job, leading to another remarkable success story. That has continued to this day, numerous school conversion projects later and we are still undertaking these projects and delivering for our client.
I assumed the role of Project Manager, overseeing labour and simultaneously managing my FM business. This demanding task was executed independently, without any managerial assistance.
My message is to never give up. Regardless of your circumstances, seize opportunities and strive to excel in your endeavours. With determination, perseverance and a diligent work ethic you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your goals.
