Transforming Space: The Multi-Purpose Media Room Project
At TBS Group, we believe that a room is more than just walls, flooring, and lights — when designed thoughtfully, it becomes a hub for creativity, comfort, learning, and connection. Our Multi-Purpose Room project is a perfect example of how we blend design, function, and joy to make a space that really works.
Purpose & Planning: Getting It Right from the Start
Every successful project begins with asking the right questions. For this build, we worked closely with our client, a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school, to define what the room needed to do — whether for dining, group activities, or quiet learning. Because it would serve many purposes, flexibility and safety were major priorities.
We then moved into the design phase: choosing a cheerful, educational theme (a farm mural featured prominently), deciding on layouts, and visualising how different parts of the room would interact. We didn’t just drop a theme in; we considered how every part of the room — from lighting and flooring to the furniture and access points — could support students and staff.
Budgeting followed, with realistic cost estimates, materials selection, and ensuring that all regulatory approvals were secured before work began. Every step had to meet both practical needs and regulatory standards, especially because this is a SEN environment.
Building & Renovation: Bringing the Vision to Life
When it came to construction, we stripped back the room to its shell, removed old fixtures, and made structural modifications where needed — one of which was reinforcing the serving hatch and installing a functional counter and shutter. Fire alarms and emergency equipment were updated to meet current regulations, ensuring safety wasn’t compromised for style.
One highlight was upgrading the lighting: we installed high-efficiency, uniform lighting in the ceiling. This not only ensures bright visibility but cuts energy use, contributing to sustainability and lowering the long-term carbon footprint. Acoustic issues were addressed with suspended ceilings, helping control noise — something especially important in multi-purpose and SEN spaces.
Walls were plastered, primed, and painted in soft neutral tones — creating calm and a clean backdrop. Then came the more exciting part: a large farm-themed vinyl mural on a feature wall, printed and professionally applied. The floor was fitted with durable, easy-clean wood-effect vinyl — strong enough for heavy use and easy to maintain.
Furnishing, Layout & Finishing Touches
We chose furnishings to balance comfort and practicality: round tables and stackable green chairs that are sturdy, easy to move, and easy to clean. The serving hatch we discussed was carefully designed for efficiency, with a shutter and counter so food or supplies can pass through easily.
Safety was built in everywhere: fire extinguisher units placed at visible points, signage that complies with regulations, and all emergency equipment properly installed. Ceiling treatments, flooring, furniture choices — every decision was made with both children’s safety and ease of use in mind.
Final Inspection & Handover: Ensuring It’s Ready for Use
Before handing the room over, TBS conducted a full safety and compliance inspection. We deep clean every surface so the space is fresh, hygienic, and ready. Then comes the all-important check: making sure everything works as planned — lights, alarms, flooring, finishes. We want users to step in and feel “wow” — that the space is safe, comfortable, and supportive of both learning and fun.
Why It Matters & How It Helps
This transformation shows what’s possible when design, safety, usability, and creativity come together. For the school, this room now offers:
A welcoming, bright space that supports different uses — meals, group sessions, and quiet activities
A calm, accessible environment geared for SEN students — with safety, low maintenance, good lighting, and acoustics
A setting that feels cheerful and inspiring — courtesy of the farm mural and thoughtful décor
A facility upgrade that aligns with energy efficiency and regulatory compliance
