Purpose & Planning: Designing for Every Sense

The aim of this project was to create an inclusive sensory space that could support both relaxation and stimulation, tailored to the diverse needs of SEN students. The school needed a safe, interactive room that could help regulate emotions, reduce anxiety, and encourage communication through controlled sensory experiences.

We began by consulting closely with staff, occupational therapists, and support workers to understand the sensory needs of the pupils who would be using the room. From lighting and acoustics to textures and technology, every detail was planned with purpose.

Our design approach focused on balance — providing calming zones for relaxation alongside stimulating, interactive elements that engage touch, sound, and sight.

Installation & Construction: Where Technology Meets Creativity

The transformation started with structural preparation — new insulated wall panelling for sound control, durable flooring for safety and comfort, and a neutral backdrop to allow sensory features to stand out.

Once the foundations were ready, our team installed a range of specialist sensory equipment, including:

Interactive light panels and bubble tubes to encourage visual tracking and focus.

Soft seating and padded walls for safety and comfort.

Audio systems and sound projectors for immersive auditory experiences.

Tactile wall surfaces and sensory boards to stimulate touch and coordination.

Colour-changing LED lighting that can be adjusted for different activities or moods.

All electrical systems were installed by TBS’s qualified engineers, ensuring full compliance with safety standards and energy efficiency.

Safety, Accessibility & Attention to Detail

Creating a sensory room isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about safety and accessibility. We made sure all materials were fire-rated, low-emission, and wipe-clean, designed for long-term durability in a school setting.

Accessibility was prioritised from start to finish — with level flooring transitions, wide entry access, and flexible layouts to accommodate mobility aids and wheelchairs.

Our team completed a full systems test before handover, ensuring every feature functioned smoothly and safely. The final result was a clean, inviting environment ready to make an immediate impact.
