Purpose & Planning: Building for Inclusion and Comfort

This project’s goal was to refurbish several key areas of an SEN school, ensuring every space was safe, accessible, and supportive of a wide range of learning needs.

The existing facilities were outdated and no longer met the school’s accessibility or sensory requirements. Our team was tasked with designing a solution that enhanced comfort, accessibility, and learning outcomes, while maintaining the school’s welcoming atmosphere.

We worked closely with staff, caregivers, and education specialists to understand how each space was used, from classrooms and corridors to sensory areas and breakout rooms. This collaborative approach ensured every design choice served a clear purpose, whether it was improving safety, reducing sensory overload, or promoting focus and calm.

Refurbishment & Construction: Tailored for Every Student

The refurbishment began with a complete refresh of flooring, lighting, and wall finishes throughout the building.

We installed non-slip, cushioned flooring to improve safety and comfort underfoot, which is especially important for students with mobility or sensory sensitivities. Walls were refinished in soft, neutral tones to create a calm and soothing atmosphere, avoiding harsh colours or glare.

Lighting was upgraded to LED systems with adjustable brightness, allowing teachers to control the ambience of each classroom for different learning activities.

Accessibility improvements included widened doorways, automatic entry systems, and handrail installations throughout hallways.

In key learning spaces, we fitted bespoke acoustic panels, to reduce echo and noise levels, ensuring that we were enabling students  ability to stay focused and comfortable.

Every material and finish was chosen for durability, hygiene, and sensory friendliness, ensuring the building would remain safe and inviting for years to come.

Safety, Compliance & Final Finishing

Safety was paramount throughout the refurbishment. All works were carried out to meet DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) and Building Regulation standards. Fire safety, ventilation, and electrical systems were upgraded and certified prior to handover.

The final stage involved detailed quality checks and professional cleaning, leaving the school spotless and ready for students to return to an improved, welcoming environment.
