Specialist Media Sensory Room

The minimum space size required is 3M X 5M for this style of room for us to install this in your educational institution.

TBS are proud to be at the forefront of innovative equipment, made to enhance learning experiences.

We recently completed the design and build of a cutting-edge specialist media sensory room.

Specialist Media Sensory Room Installation:
- This room was fully equipped with multiple projectors and controlled lighting to provide an immersive, calming, and interactive wall to wall environment. This bespoke space was delivered for a specialist educational and therapeutic setting, aimed at supporting sensory stimulation and learning, or as a space for young people to regulate their emotions, through the promotion of relaxation.

Strip-Out & Room Preparation:
- The project began with the transformation of a standard former classroom/office space into a fully enclosed, acoustically controlled sensory room. We started by carrying out a full strip-out of any existing finishes or fittings, removing all old materials to prepare the space for new installations.

- The walls were boarded and prepared with appropriate finishes to allow for specialist paint and acoustic control. A suspended ceiling grid system with acoustic tiles was then installed to enhance sound control and allow easy integration of services. The floor was levelled, and we installed a soft-surface, non-slip vinyl flooring, which is suitable for both wheelchair access and barefoot users, ensuring safety and comfort.

Electrical & Audio-Visual Systems:
- A key feature of this sensory room is its multi-projector system, which enables a fully immersive, wraparound visual experience. Our specialist electrical and AV teams supplied and installed several ceiling-mounted HD projectors, which were positioned to ensure even coverage and minimal shadowing.

- All ceiling cables were neatly managed and routed through discreet AV housings, with anti-tamper fixings for safety and durability. We provided structured cabling and power supplies for both the projectors and the control units, and we installed a wall-mounted control panel and a remote system, allowing staff to easily operate the setup.

- The room was fully integrated with media input systems, including HDMI, USB, and wireless sources, to accommodate a wide range of content. To enhance the visual experience further, we installed low-glare, dimmable power saving lighting, including integrated perimeter lighting strips to enable mood-setting and ambient control. We added acoustic treatment to reduce echo and improve sound quality.

- To maintain a comfortable and regulated environment, we installed a wall-mounted air conditioning unit, which offers both heating and cooling options. Ventilation grills and ducting were added to ensure a consistent supply of fresh air throughout the room. All HVAC components were selected and installed with acoustic dampening features, ensuring the room remains quiet and free from disruptive operational noise.

Finishing & Compliance:
- To complete the room, we applied a smooth, matte-finish anti-scuff paint to all walls, designed to enhance projection visibility and reduce sensory overload. Colours were carefully selected to support a calming atmosphere while providing a suitable surface for high-quality image projection.

- We professionally installed durable skirting and door trim to ensure a clean, finished look. Once all elements were installed, we carried out full testing and commissioning of all systems, performed by qualified engineers to confirm correct functionality and safety.

- All works were delivered in full compliance with current British Standards for electrical systems, health and safety regulations, and accessibility requirements under the Equality Act.

The Outcome:
The completed media sensory room is a high-quality, immersive space, designed to serve a wide variety of functions. It supports sensory therapy for neurodiversity users, multimedia learning or storytelling sessions, and relaxation and mindfulness activities, including quiet zones for de-escalation when needed.

The multi-projector setup allows for dynamic visual displays, helping to stimulate and engage users in a range of settings. The controlled environment enhances focus, comfort, and emotional regulation. The fully integrated and easy-to-use system ensures that staff and facilitators can deliver sessions smoothly and with confidence.

This project reflects our ability to deliver specialist, tailored environments that improve wellbeing, accessibility, and interaction through intelligent design and expert delivery.
