Tarmac Project

The project commenced with a comprehensive site survey to assess the ground conditions and design layout. Once approved, the team carried out full site clearance, which involved:

Initial Site Preparation:
- Removal of existing vegetation, debris, and previous surfacing materials
- Excavating the area to the required depth to accommodate the sub-base and tarmac layers
- Disposing of all waste material in accordance with environmental guidelines was taking

Groundworks & Drainage Installation:
- Before any surfacing work could begin, proper drainage infrastructure was installed to prevent future surface water issues:
- Excavation and installation of drainage channels, gullies, and underground pipework
- Setting correct gradients and falls was important in ensuring water runoff flows efficiently toward drainage outlets
- Backfilling and compacting was important in order to secure the drainage system

Edging & Kerbing:
To define the car park boundaries and improve the structural edge, we installed:
- Timber edging.
- Laid and hunched in concrete for long-term stability
- This provides clean lines for bays and prevents surface spread over time

Sub-Base Formation:
A high-quality crushed stone sub-base was laid and compacted in layers. This step is crucial for:
- Providing a solid load-bearing foundation
- Improving drainage below the tarmac surface
- Preventing cracking and settlement over time

Binder Course Installation:
- Once the sub-base was complete, a dense bitumen macadam (DBM) binder course was applied
- This middle layer adds strength and durability and is laid to a specified thickness depending on the purpose of the tarmac.
- Finally, it is machine-rolled to ensure a uniform, compacted finish

Surface Course (Wearing Layer)
The final layer consisted of a hard-wearing asphalt or SMA (stone mastic asphalt) surface course which is:
- Laid using precision equipment for an even and smooth finish
- Machine-rolled for compaction and longevity
- Designed for high skid resistance and durability under frequent vehicle use

Final Touches & Inspection:
All site areas were cleaned, with waste materials removed. This was followed promptly by a full quality control inspection which, was carried out and, consisted of checking levels, drainage performance, and the overall finish. The site was handed over fully operational, ready for immediate use.
